Is sitting causing your back pain?
At West Sussex Chiropractic we see patients’ everyday suffering from neck pain, back pain, headaches and other health issues related to stagnant sitting postures.
It is estimated the average ‘office worker’ sits for between 12-14 hours per day. Often commuting, eating, working and relaxing are all performed sitting down. Research is demonstrating prolonged sitting for the spine is as damaging as too much sugar is for our teeth.
By sitting down we switch off a lot of our postural muscles and place increased loads on the spine. In fact sitting creates the highest level of loading on the spine of all the sedentary postures. The weight of the upper body and head is carried primarily by the discs and joints of the spine causing neck pain, back pain and long term damage. Sitting with a typical slouched workplace computer or laptop posture creates approximately 185kg of pressure on the discs in the lower back compared with 100kg when standing.
As Chiropractors we are trained to assess and diagnose postural distortions that lead to spinal problems. We see an individual’s posture as a window to their spine. Where the patient’s posture is poor it is often the case that their spinal health and overall wellbeing are also suffering. Here are a few easy tips to improve your workplace posture and your overall health and wellbeing.
- The best way to minimise the damage to your spine is to stay as active as possible.
- Intermittently get up from your workstation and walk around is an easy way to ease postural stress.
- Simple stress relieving exercises while you work. A great piece of exercise reminder software called the Posture improving Pet periodically reminds, demonstrates and encourages you to perform exercises that are designed to reduce postural stress.
- Have your HR department or OH&S officer assess your workstation ergonomics and customise it to suit you. The correct way set up your workstation can be found at various different websites online.
- If you start to get, or are already suffering from, symptoms such as back pain, neck pain or headaches associated with prolonged sitting, consult your Chiropractor or health care professional immediately.
